Song of Forever (pt.1)

by aaron liechty

susy and john met in a snowstorm
clouds piled up like rags and wool
susy in her winter things
john thinking hard about little things
susy and john fell into each other
and wouldn’t come unglued
susy in the snow thinking
this will be a long winter
john out by the trestle watching
the rusted trains roll through

this is not a love song
john says,
this is how it goes
exactly how it goes
a song without you
is like a metaphor
and i'm tired
so tired

it was a long brittle winter
so cold some mornings the car wouldn’t start
susy contracted illnesses
john drank tea and orange juice
susy and john lay awake at night
and heard the trains roll through

this is not a love song
susy says,
this is how it goes
exactly how it goes
a song without you
is like a metaphor
and i'm tired
so tired

late in february or early march
when the shell of winter begins to crack
john thinks of mountains
outside the library, on the sidewalk
susy is at work printing
now john is in the car leaving
and the little hum that was in the air
just dies away. and dies away
later that night in a motel 6
john hears the trains pass through

this is not a love song
we know
this is how it goes
exactly how it goes
a song without you
is like a metaphor
and i'm tired
so tired

Song of Forever (pt.2)

by eric meyer

intro
merry goes round and round and round
merry goes round and round some more
in and out, up and down
merry goes round and round and round

skipping stones on a frozen lake
the sun has lost its balance
burns the trees as it falls
the end of one verse is the beginning
puddles filled and running
wet on the legs of splashing lovers
wild like leaves or evening mass
wild like falling asleep
and all is green and cold and cozy
running home in clinging clothes
hand in hand, a full swing band
clothes in a puddle at the foot of the stairs
you held me close on christmas eve
till the sun came up and we cried
all alone together
in your arms
in your arms

this is how it goes - this song
exactly how it goes
a song without you is like a metaphor
i'm so tired. so tired.

and there's no time for love today
sheets full billowed with wonder
the sun has left us, the moon has too
we'll hold each other and cry

this is how it goes - this song
exactly how it goes
a song without you is like a metaphor
i'm so tired. so tired.

in your arms
i'm so tired
in your arms
bring me home
