Brenda's postings

My first posts to this site are the papers I wrote for Gayle Gerber Koontz's class "Theology and Religious Pluralism" this last semester at AMBS. I was glad for the conversation about these topics in South Dakota and would be glad for ongoing conversation as you have time to read the papers.

I also want to post three sermons that I've preached in the last several years that I think bear more thinking about. I told someone at Benton recently that the way to a preacher's heart is to talk with her about her sermons - hearing your thoughts, questions, challenges, all make me happy.

The most recent is one I preached the Sunday after the hostages were taken in Iraq, when my text was the anunciation of Mary along with some verses from Isaiah. It made me cry, which doesn't mean it will do the same for you. God with us

I preached on Romans 13 in a series at Benton on relating to government right after the 2004 election. It probably isn't as fun to read as it was to preach - I really enjoyed the story of Paul and Silas in prison, and connecting Paul's life in action to his exhortations in Romans 13. Now is the Time to Wake Up

The third I preached at a Merry Lea conference entitled "Regenerative Communities". It is based on ideas I first got from Ched Myers, by way of Daniel Erlander's wonderful book "Manna and Mercy". Manna living

And finally while I'm posting things I've written, I'd like to post my "Mennonites and Power" paper that I wrote for Ted Koontz's ethics seminar a year and a half ago. I am using some of these ideas as the basis for my integration paper that I'm working on right now, which is on leadership and authority in pastoring, so your comments on this one may be snatched up for immediate reference. Warning - this one is 30 pages. Mennonites and Power
